From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 23, 1913:

“This is the story of a little child named Lillie Moore. It is one of the tragedies that go on about us without the world knowing about it. The child is now in the home of the social service league, thanks to the good offices of Mrs. Gillispie, and the court found this morning that it was an abandoned and neglected child. On February 8 complaint was made to J. D. Fincher by J. D. Garrison that Lillie Moore, the two year old child of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Moore, who lived over the co-operative store, was neglected. He at once investigated and found the child sick with pneumonia. It was too ill to be moved so medical attention was provided and the child became better. Then the case was called in the juvenile court and was to have been heard this morning. Wednesday Mr. Moore was informed that the child had been abandoned. He went to investigate and found that it had been left with a woman in the same flat, who was told that the mother would return for it in half an hour. She did not come back that night and the next morning Mr. Fincher was notified. He asked Mrs. Gillispie to look after it, which she at once did. The child was taken to the social service room after it had been given some medicine by Dr. Gillispie…. The child is now in hands that insure it good attention. This morning when the case was called in court no one appeared. It is believed the Moores have left town. The child is being kept at the social service league house. It is receiving every attention. Lillie Moore is a bright little girl two years old on Feb. 28. She is eligible to adoption and if a good home is found for her Mr. Fincher will be glad to have her adopted.”
