40 years ago: Commission attempts better connection with public

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 22, 1973:

  • At a recent meeting of the Lawrence City Commission, commissioner Jack Rose had outlined a proposal for the creation of a citizens’ advisory council. Citing reduced public attendance at recent meetings, commissioners were attempting to discover ways to better connect with the citizens of Lawrence and respond to their concerns.
  • The Army Corps of Engineers today announced a fee schedule for facilities at Corps project lakes starting this spring. The Corps wished to make campers pay for the use of lake facilities developed at federal expense. The fees, which were to be implemented nationwide, would primarily affect overnight campers, according to the Kansas City district public affairs officers. The fee schedule did not include any costs for boat launching or admission to Corps-operated recreation areas.
