From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 12, 1973:

• Seventeen residents from the Clinton area attended a recent meeting of the Douglas County Commission to express their concerns about the conditions of roads in their area and about the future of the roads as the development of Clinton Lake continued. Dean Sanderson, county public works director, said that roads countywide were suffering from months of bad weather, but several area residents countered with claims that there had been little or no maintenance done on their roads for several years.
• Mrs. Tola M. Ross today became the first woman to file for the Lawrence City Commission. Ross, owner-operator of the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Store, said that her life experience fitted her for the position: “I don’t have a B.S. and A.B. or anything degree, mine’s just from the school of hard knocks.” She added that the “common man in Lawrence doesn’t have a representative, most are on a salaried job where they can’t run and I feel they need a representative.”
