180-foot tower planned south of Lone Star Lake

Douglas County commissioners on Wednesday will consider a conditional use permit to allow a 180-foot-tall emergency communications tower on property south of Lone Star Lake.

The commission meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St.

The tower would be constructed on property the county intends to lease from Jere McElhaney at the southeast corner of North 400 Road and East 550 Road, about 10 miles west and one mile north of Baldwin City. Commissioners will also vote on the proposed lease with McElhaney, who is a former county commissioner.

County officials say the tower will help enhance and upgrade the county’s emergency communications system to conform with new 800 MHz digital radio standards.
