40 years ago: Radar units approved for turnpike patrol

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 8, 1973:

  • Gov. Robert Docking this week approved the purchase by the Kansas Turnpike Authority of six moving radar units. The units, which would be used by the turnpike patrol, would be purchased through a highway safety program grant. They would have the capacity to measure the speed of oncoming vehicles while the patrol car was in motion, the governor’s office said.
  • Winter was trying to creep back into the Lawrence area today. Temperatures, which had reached a high of 41 recently, were dropping back down, and cloudy skies were threatening snow. A warming trend was on tap for the weekend, but in typical Kansas fashion, snow was again in the forecast about five days after that.
