From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 6, 1973:

The Kansas University Endowment Association announced today that the group was purchasing seven parcels of property along Oread Avenue and Louisiana Street to extend the university campus north. The acquisitions included the old Gaslight Tavern building (operating in 1973 as the Mount Oread Bar and Grill) just north of the Kansas Union building; a building just to the north of the Gaslight, and five other properties across the street to the east. It was expected that the university’s acquisition of the area would not only allow for expansion but would also improve the appearance of the area, where several deteriorating older buildings would be razed. In detailing the acquisitions today, Irvin Youngberg, executive secretary of the endowment association, said that the old Gaslight Tavern building and the structure to the north were being purchased from Mary Rowlands. The present operator had a lease running to June 30, 1976, Youngberg said, and the property would be razed when vacated. Some of the funds for the purchase were coming from contributions to KU’s Program for Progress, which had reached a total of $20 million since its 1966 launch.
