School board to receive land donation for new tech ed center

The Lawrence school board will receive the donation of land for a new technical education center during a special meeting at noon Monday.

The land includes roughly 11 acres near the HiPer Technology Inc., facility at 2920 Haskell Ave. HiPer Real Estate Holdings LLC is listed as the entity donating the land.

The $5.7 million project is being funded with a portion of the $92.5 million bond issue that district voters approved in April.

School district officials had originally planned to build a 30,000-square foot facility near Holcom Park, next to the existing Community Connections Center. But plans shifted when Chamber of Commerce officials proposed a joint project that will also include a separate adult job training and education center to be managed by the Lawrence Economic Development Corp.

The Chamber’s portion of the new facility will be known as the Dwayne Peaslee College and Career Center, in honor of the longtime labor leader and Lawrence Chamber of Commerce member.

The EDC recently completed its purchase of a portion of the existing HiPer facility where it plans to build the adult training center.

The special school board meeting will be at the administration building, 110 McDonald Drive.
