Police arrested two juveniles on suspicion of aggravated battery following an investigation of reports that students were hit by Airsoft gun pellets Wednesday afternoon at an East Lawrence elementary school.

Police were called to Kennedy Elementary after Boys and Girls Club staff reported club members being struck by plastic pellets believed to have been fired from Airsoft guns from a location off of school property while the children were at recess.

Nine children complained of being hit by plastic pellets but no students needed treatment outside of school grounds, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. Julie Boyle, a Lawrence Public Schools spokeswoman, said that the parents of the students were notified following the incident.

Police moved the children back inside the school and later identified two suspects between the ages of 10 and 12 at a residence in the 1700 block of East 21st Street, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. McKinley said both were taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.

“We took this incident very seriously,” McKinley said.
