40 years ago: Lawrence voters defeat airport bond issue

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 19, 1973:

Lawrence voters this month defeated the $664,000 bond issue for the Lawrence airport expansion. Of the 5,697 votes cast, 1,641 were for the bonds and 4,048 against them. The issue suffered overwhelming defeat in every polling place but one. In the Second Ward of the Fourth Precinct, whose voters reported to Allen Fieldhouse to cast their ballots, the issue lost by only 16 votes of 282 cast. Airport boosters expressed their disappointment at the loss, saying that the airport issue was “a problem the city will have to face.” Charles Haverty, chair of the Airport for Lawrence Committee, noted the defeat “doesn’t meant the problem is gone…. The work will have to be done in the future.”
