• In a continuing attempt to carry on normal activities during the energy crisis, Lawrence school officials announced this week that daytime activities in U.S.D. 497 school buildings would be allowed during Christmas vacation, but interior temperatures would be considerably lower than usual. Supt. Carl Knox said the district’s recently appointed task force on energy was to decide later what the temperature would be and whether nighttime activities would be curtailed.
• In Baldwin, city officials were trying to make the best decisions regarding about $41,000 general funds. Mayor Virgil Reeves said this week the City Council had decided to invest that amount in Baldwin State Bank certificates until the money was needed. Preparing for a snowy winter, the council had accepted a $1,335 bid from a Topeka company for a snow blade to attach to a city truck to clear snow. The city didn’t have any other snow removal equipment and had been using a city road grader, according to Mayor Reeves.
