40 years ago: Court fight continues over money found on farm

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 17, 1973:

Cash discovered on a farm more than a year earlier had been “mislaid” by the owners, according to a statement filed in district court. The statement, filed by an attorney for Bradford D. Charles and Susie Payton, said the two owned the cash that had been found in October 1972 on a farm south of Lawrence. The statement also said that Charles and Payton were the occupants of the property, and that Robert Gottstein, Perry, who found the money, had no right to it. The cash, officially described by officials as “between $10,000 and $25,000,” had been taken by Gottstein to Douglas County Sheriff Rex Johnson for safekeeping; Johnson had place it in a bank safety deposit box, where it still remained.
