Two freshmen took center stage in Veritas Christian’s girls basketball matchup with Topeka Heritage on Saturday at the Eudora Recreation Center.

Veritas freshman Tori Huslig led all scorers with 27 points, but Heritage freshman Raegen Cowsert hit big shots down the stretch to force overtime, and Heritage won.

Cowsert drilled three three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including one at the buzzer to tie the game at the end of regulation.

“I told her (Cowsert) after the game that that is the way to step up big,” Veritas head coach Kevin Shelton said. “... It’s tough for seniors to step up and hit that.”

After Heritage led 31-19 at halftime, Huslig helped fuel a 10-0 Veritas run to begin the third quarter and a 12-0 run to start the fourth. The Eagles appeared to have the game in hand until Cowsert’s heroics sent the game to overtime.

Cowsert was one of three players in double figures for Heritage. Danielle McElroy had a team-high 17, with Cowsert and McKenna Ward chipping in 15 and 11, respectively.

Veritas (3-3) will look to bounce back at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Tri City Christian in Independence, Mo.

Veritas boys 58, Topeka Heritage 47

A 20-point effort from sophomore Chad Stieben helped lead Veritas Christian’s boys basketball team to a victory against Topeka Heritage on Saturday.

Stieben nailed a buzzer-beating three-pointer in the third quarter to tie the game at 40, and Veritas used that momentum to pull out the win in the fourth.

“The moment is not the best part of making a three,” Stieben said. “It’s coming back to the huddle and everyone is like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’”

The three-pointer to end the third was the beginning of 14 unanswered points for Veritas. The Eagles continued to dial it up from long distance to begin the fourth as Miles Dressler knocked down two threes, and Micah Edmondson hit another to build the lead to 51-40.

Veritas had a problem containing Heritage’s Cam Doss, who scored nine points in the first quarter. However, foul trouble limited Doss for the remainder of the game, and he finished with 18 points after fouling out midway through the fourth.

Veritas (3-2) will play Tri City Christian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Independence, Mo.
