From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1973:

• Two high school students and a crossing guard had been hit by a car in a morning accident in Eudora this week. Ivan A. Cockroft, 78, the crossing guard, was reported in “fairly good condition” at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The two Eudora High freshmen, both 14, were treated at LMH for minor cuts and bruises. The accident had occurred in a school crosswalk at Main and K-10 near the high school, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. A southbound car driven by a Eudora 17-year-old had stopped at the crosswalk before making a left turn onto K-10. The pedestrians, seeing the car halted, had entered the crosswalk and had been struck by the car as it continued through the walkway. The driver was cited for reckless driving and for failure to have a driver’s license.
• In Lawrence a 12-year-old girl had suffered a cut foot when she was hit by a car as she was walking to Riverside School. The driver told police her car had been moving slowly but that she had not seen the girl because of the sun.
• Fifteen-year-old Larry Jury was dismissed this week from the Kansas University Medical Center, where he had been treated for accidental gunshot wounds he had received Nov. 10. Jury and a friend had been hunting quail when the gun had accidentally discharged, striking Jury in the arm and chest.
