40 years ago: Off-year election to focus on airport expansion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 14, 1973:

  • About 7,000 to 8,000 of Lawrence’s 28,014 registered voters were expected at the polls this week to decide if the city should issue $644,000 in general obligation bonds to match federal funds for a $1.93 million Lawrence Airport expansion. Douglas County Clerk Delbert Mathia estimated at least 7,000 voters if the weather was favorable and said that the turnout would be “about average” for an off-year bond election.
  • The Lawrence Humane Society was conducting a fund drive this month to raise $5,000 to feed and house animals during the coming year. During 1973 the society had taken care of 3,200 homeless cats and dogs at the Charles Ise Memorial Animal Shelter.
