From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 12, 1973:

• Two Lawrence businesses this week were temporarily affected by cuts in natural gas service. Stokely-Van Camp Inc. and the Lawrence Paper Co. had returned to full natural gas service today after several days of operating on secondary fuel. The companies had been cut 50 percent in their natural gas supply. Both plants had contracts for interruptible service and had secondary fuel supplies. Bill Salome, general manager of Kansas Public Service Co., said the same two companies had also been on interrupted service three weeks earlier and that this was normal when the weather becomes cold. No other businesses or schools in Lawrence, operating under similar contracts, had yet gone on interruptible service, Salome said.
• A news brief this week mentioned that service stations on the Kansas Turnpike would be open on the upcoming Sunday, but gasoline sales would be limited to meet emergency requirements only. These requirements were defined by the Kansas Turnpike Authority as enough fuel to get a motorist to his or her destination or to get a stranded motorist to the next fuel station.
