Baldwin City — Baldwin High guard Cornell Brown led a second-quarter surge Monday as the Bulldogs downed Chanute in the first round of the Bulldog/Wildcat Classic.

Brown finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. The senior point guard took charge of the game in the second quarter, scoring 10 points by aggressively driving into the lane on half-court sets and to the basket on fast breaks.

The Bulldogs also knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter, three by senior guard Tim Craig, as they increased what had been a two-point advantage at the end of the first quarter to a 38-22 halftime lead.

After a cold third quarter in which Baldwin scored only five points, Brown helped steady the Bulldogs with 11 fourth-quarter points, including nine from the free-throw line.

The tournament that alternates annually between Baldwin and Burlington has a pool format.
