Emporia edges Lawrence girls in opener

? Makayla Bell scored 13 points with eight rebounds in the season opener for the Lawrence High girls basketball team, which missed a potential game-winner in the final seconds and lost to Emporia, 47-45, on Friday.

The Lions forced 25 turnovers in the loss. Marissa Pope led LHS with five assists.

“If we keep battling and playing like we did tonight, we’ll have a successful season, for sure,” LHS coach Nick Wood said.

The Lions host Junction City at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
