Veritas wins two at tourney

? Veritas Christian won a pair of high school basketball games Thursday at the Shea Invitational.

The Veritas boys defeated Junction City St. Xavier, 58-38, and the Eagles’ girls stopped St. Xavier, 44-18.

Veritas’ boys improved to 1-1, and the Eagles’ girls were playing their season opener. Both teams advanced to today’s tournament semifinals, with the girls playing at 3 p.m. and the boys at 4:30 p.m.

Micah Edmondson scored 15 points, and Winston Wiebe had 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead Veritas.

“I thought we played really hard,” Veritas boys coach Blake Mudd said. “We really moved the ball offensively.”

Seth Hale scored 10 points, and Miles Dressler scored eight, and Mark Weinhold had six points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

Veritas girls 44, St. Xavier 18

Tori Huslig scored 13 points and made eight steals, and Hannah Gloss and Alyssa Krestan scored 10 points apiece for Veritas.

Krestan also had six steals, and Macie Dressler totaled six points and four rebounds.

“We’re going to have to learn how to pressure, with our youth, and we did that,” Veritas girls coach Kevin Shelton said.
