A Leavenworth County District Court jury found a 33-year-old McLouth man guilty of aggravated assault and obstruction of official duty for trying to run over a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.

The jury met for two hours Tuesday before finding Kevin Reed guilty.

The incident occurred May 22 when Trooper Jason Wohlgemuth tried to pull a woman over for driving without registration, according to Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson. The vehicle sped away through road construction at the Kansas Highway 16/235th Street split in Leavenworth County.

Wohlgemuth saw that the vehicle pulled into a rural residence and drove behind a barn. Wohlgemuth parked at the top of the driveway and approached the barn on foot. Reed was in the driver’s seat when Wohlgemuth approached the SUV, according to Thompson.

Wohlgemuth ordered Reed at gunpoint to get out of the vehicle. He instead drove at Wohlgemuth, who then shot at the vehicle’s tires, deflating one.

Reed drove onto 235th Street, later abandoning the vehicle.

Law enforcement officials found Reed in a barn after an hour-long search.

Sentencing will be 1 p.m. Dec. 18 in Leavenworth.
