Lawrence police increased patrols during the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, and effort funded by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a police department spokesman. Even so, the increased patrols did not yield a similar increase in citations.

McKinley said police contacted 301 individuals, 244 of them for adult seat belt violations. McKinley said police issued 10 speeding tickets and performed one DUI/OUI arrest.

Lt. Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, also reported no significant increase in calls over the four-day holiday weekend.

Statewide, Kansas Highway Patrol reported drops in adult seat belt citations (down to 230 from 349 in 2012) and speeding citations (down to 1,343 from 1,568 in 2012). Highway patrol officers also issued far fewer seat belt warnings than last year: 16, down from 58. The Highway Patrol, meanwhile, worked two fatalities: one in Hays on Nov. 28 and another near Cimarron on Nov. 30.
