Embiid named Big 12 newcomer of the week

Kansas center Joel Embiid looks across the lane as Andrew Wiggins lines up for a pair of free throws during the second half on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Kansas University freshman Joel Embiid became the second Jayhawk to win Big 12 newcomer of the week honors this season, joining freshman wing Andrew Wiggins, who was won the award Nov. 18.

Embiid scored in double digits in two contests as the Jayhawks recorded a 2-1 record at the Battle 4 Atlantis. The freshman center also had 10 blocked shots for the week while shooting 63.2 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

He had seven blocks against UTEP, setting the KU freshman record for blocked shots in a game, previously held by Nick Collison (vs. Nebraska in 2000) and averaged 9.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in the three-day tournament.

Embiid ranks third in the Big 12 in blocks and ninth in rebounds.

Jayhawks fall to 6th in AP Poll

KU’s semifinal loss to Villanova in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament dropped the Jayhawks from second to sixth in the latest Associated Press poll.

Next up KU will play at Colorado on Saturday before traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for a match-up with Florida on Dec. 10.

Villanova, which won the Battle 4 Atlantis crown, jumped all the way up to No. 14 after not being ranked a week ago.
