Intramural volleyball: Registration has started for the girl’s Intramural Middle School Volleyball Program Grades sixth, seventh & eighth sponsored by the Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department and Lawrence USD 497. Alvamar CC golf: An Alvamar Country Club team currently holds first place in a women’s regional match-play golf competition among nine teams through six of eight matches. The final match in the series will be Sept. 12 at Alvamar CC.

Record hiker to speak: Jennifer Pharr-Davis, the world-record holder for the fastest through-hike of the Appalachian Trail at 46 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes, will speak at Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14. Her talk will cover specifics of her trail success, her inspirations and what lies next for her. In 2011, Pharr-Davis completed the iconic trail, which stretches 2181 miles, at an average pace of 46.9 miles per day. This topped her previous record by 11 days, which was already the female time to beat. Her effort in 2011 was the best of any gender. She was awarded National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year, as well as Ultrarunning Magazine’s top female performance of 2011.

Penny Jones golf: The Penny Jones Open golf tournament will be held Sept. 6 at Alvamar public and private courses. Two tee times are available for two- and four-person scrambles: 8 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Benefits Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association. Breakfast and lunch provided.
