A 20-year-old former Kansas University student has been sentenced to probation after being convicted of aggravated battery in connection with an alleged sexual assault in February at a dormitory on the KU campus.

Jeremy R. Ruzas was sentenced to 18 months of probation today in Douglas County District Court after pleading no contest to the aggravated battery charge in July. He was arrested on Feb. 11 after a female KU student, 19 at the time, reported to police that Ruzas had assaulted her at night in her room at Oliver Hall dormitory.

Ruzas had been drinking, entered the woman’s room uninvited, and assaulted the woman while she was in bed, according to prosecutors. Ruzas was initially charged with aggravated sexual battery and burglary but pleaded no contest to aggravated battery as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He left the university after he was charged in the incident, and returned to his home in Illinois.

Douglas County District Judge Sally Pokorny suspended an eight-month prison sentence, as required by Kansas state sentencing guidelines, because Ruzas had no criminal history. But Pokorny said Ruzas would face serving the sentence in prison if he violates the conditions of probation, which is likely to be transferred to the state of Illinois.
