From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 22, 1973:

• Natural gas was expected to be in adequate supply this winter, but the lack of a surplus was causing authorities to warn Kansas customers that they might be receiving higher bills. Bill Salome of Kansas Public Service Gas Co. said today that the company had to pass along a price increase effective this week, with other price increases expected by January. The company had a list of customers who had alternate fuel oil or coal heating systems and could therefore be cut off at a moment’s notice if the natural gas supply were to become critical. Those on the list included Haskell Indian Junior College, Kansas University, and several of the larger industries in Lawrence.
• At their most recent meeting, Lawrence City Commissioners made the decision of which projects would receive $468,349 from the city revenue-sharing account. The allocation was to go toward the renovation of the Community Building and the conversion of the present police-fire building into a city hall. In other action, commissioners gave first reading to an ordinance raising charges at the city landfill and approved a school crossing guard for Eighth and Kasold streets, despite an earlier protest to the school district that crossing guards should be the financial responsibility of the school district.
