From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 20, 1988:

Residents in a south Lawrence neighborhood were pressing the city to repair sewer problems that had long been plaguing their house’s crawl space with raw sewage. “I’ve been fighting this for eight or nine years,” said the owner of the home on Belle Haven Drive. “It’s unbelievable in our house. I’m just at my wit’s end…. The city won’t give me answers. So I finally just turned it over to an attorney. I don’t believe in going to an attorney, I just don’t, but I didn’t know what else to do.” Lawrence attorney Dean Burkhead said that city officials had promised a thorough investigation. City Manager Buford Watson, who had recently inspected the home, said that city workers had unclogged the sewer line near the residence several times in the past few years, most recently this weekend. “There has been a dispute in the past over whether it was the city main or his sewer,” Watson said. “There was no question Saturday that it was the city sewer. Our intention is to try to fix it.”
