Around and About for Aug. 17, 2013

Kaitlin Heller, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List at Bethel College in North Newton for earning a GPA between 3.7 and 4.0 for the past academic year.

Kody Kirk, of Lawrence, graduated from the Camp KAOS Starship Earth July 19 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. Starship Earth is a four-day camp for students entering fifth and sixth grades that introduces campers to space science while emphasizing teamwork and problem solving.

Thomas All and Reece Krall, of Lawrence, graduated from the Camp KAOS Space 101 program July 20 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. Space 101 is a four-day, introductory astronaut training camp for students entering seventh and eighth grades emphasizing teamwork, leadership and problem solving.

Sam Wolcott, of Lawrence, graduated from the Alien Adventure program July 26 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. Alien Adventure is a three-day camp for students entering fourth and fifth grades. Students investigate the nature of life on our planet and the possibility of life elsewhere.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has inducted Martha Tucci, of Lawrence. Tucci was initiated at Kansas University. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Olivia Dykes, of Lawrence, was named to William Jewell College Dean’s List for spring 2013. To qualify, students must have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Aaron Rea, a 2009 Lawrence High School graduate, was named MIAA Scholar-Athlete at Emporia State University for spring 2013. Rea received a 3.52 GPA and finished out his college baseball eligibility at Emporia.

Fifty-two new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center on May 24 in Yoder. Area graduates include Sarah Gumpert, a patrol officer with the Tonganoxie Police Department; and Ryan Neiswender, a deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
