40 years ago: King Radio reaches $1 million milestone

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 17, 1973:

  • Keith Guthrie, plant manager for King Radio Corp., was pictured in today’s Journal-World proudly displaying the radio component that represented the plant reaching $1 million in production since the Lawrence plant had opened in April. The Olathe-based firm, which then had 280 employees at the Lawrence facility, assembled radio consoles for small aircraft and other types of radio gear.
  • Twenty-one Lawrence High School students returning this week from two weeks in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park had set several records for the Mountain Ventures Program. Kenneth Highfill, LHS biology teacher and program sponsor, reported that the group had seen more wildlife and had taken more photographs than any other Mountain Venture group. The LHS students had taken all-day hikes into wilderness areas from a base camp in the park, with 17 group members scaling Long’s Peak on their final day.
