Hung jury in trial of Lawrence man in sexual assault case

The trial of a 32-year-old Lawrence man accused of sexually assaulting a woman last August has ended in a hung jury, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office

The man was facing a single count of aggravated sexual battery in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a 42-year-old woman at a central Lawrence residence on Aug. 20.

The trial began Monday with jury selection in Douglas County District Court and continued through Wednesday before ending in a hung jury when jurors could not reach a unanimous decision.

The man, an acquaintance of the victim, was arrested Sept. 21, according to police.

Douglas County prosecutors initially charged the man with attempted rape, but that charge was downgraded to aggravated sexual battery because, prosecutors said, that was what they believed they could prove in court.

Whether the case moves forward or is dropped will be decided in a hearing on Aug. 22.

The Journal-World generally does not name sex-crime suspects unless they are convicted.
