From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 15, 1973:

• A one-day unsanctioned strike by electrical line crews against Kansas Power and Light Co. ended today. Gene Pitts of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 304 said this morning that the strike had not been authorized by the union but that workers had intended “to give their local negotiating committees a little bit of moral support” in their ongoing contract negotiations. About 350 employees were estimated to have been involved in the strike, including 25 in Lawrence. Pitts said that the union was seeking a 10 percent salary increase as well as double time for work after 16 hours on the job in emergency situations. Workers were currently averaging $4.25 an hour.
• The state’s division of architectural services was waiting for Kansas University officials to submit specifications for a new Law School building before appointing an architect to design the structure. KU and the Kansas Board of Regents had agreed to spend $4.9 million on a building with over 71,000 square feet of usable space. Elsewhere on campus, an architect was due to be appointed later this week for the new KU visual arts building.
