Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks will be hosting new swimmer tryouts at the Alvamar Pool located at Bishop Seabury Academy from 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 16 and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 17. The Aquahawks are always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Summer bike ride: Lawrence Bicycle Club Summer Fun Beginner’s Ride will be held Mondays. The ride begins at 6:45 p.m. at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold, preceded at 6:15 for tech and riding tips. The ride will be approximately 10 miles (the first few rides will be seven miles) at 10 mph, mostly on the bike path. All are welcome; kids under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and all children under 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian. Henrickson golf tournament: The ninth annual Bonnie Henrickson Golf Tournament will take place on Aug. 24 at Alvamar Country Club. Registration is available for singles, pairs and foursomes. All proceeds from the tournament will go to support Kansas University women’s basketball and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center. The event includes a four-person scramble at 1 p.m., followed by a dinner and live and silent auctions beginning at 6 p.m. The KU women’s basketball team and staff will be there throughout the day to cheer on the teams. Family Promise golf: Former Kansas University basketball player Wayne Simien and Cindy Self, wife of KU coach Bill Self, again will co-chair the Family Promise Golf Tournament and auction party. The auction party — to benefit homeless children and their families in Lawrence — will be Sept. 15 at Maceli’s. On Sept. 16, four-person teams will compete in two flights of the golf tournament at Alvamar Country Club. Sandrat Trail Run: The 21st annual Sandrat Trail Run will be held at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. It will be approximately 9.5 miles along the Kansas River, on the river trails. The start/finish is near John Taylor Park, near N. 7th St. & Elm in North Lawrence. There will also be a 1K (.6 mile) fun run for the “Rug Rats” following the trail run. (Approximately 10:30 a.m.). Intramural volleyball: Registration has started for the girls Intramural Middle School Volleyball Program Grades sixth, seventh & eighth sponsored by the Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department and Lawrence USD 497. Leagues will include sixth grade only and a seventh- and eighth-grade combined league. The program consists of weekly practices to be held at each middle school starting the week of Sept. 9. Games will be held on Saturday mornings beginning Sept. 21 at the middle schools. Participation fee is $55, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at any of the local Lawrence Parks & Recreation centers, at all of the middle school offices, plus on the Parks & Recreation website at www.lprd.org under youth sports. Trail races: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host Hawk 100, 50 and 26.2-mile trail races on the North Shore Trails at Clinton Lake on Sept. 14-15. The “Hawk Hundred” 100-Mile Trail Run features four 25-mile loops on Clinton Lake’s wooded, rocky, root-bound North Shore trail system. The “Hawk 50” runners will complete two laps of the 25-mile course, while runners in the 26.2-mile Hawk Marathon “fun run” will add an extra 1.2 miles off-trail to the beginning of their one-lap race. The races begin and end at Shelter 1 in the Army Corps of Engineers’ Overlook Park section of Clinton Lake State Park. Runners will visit fully staffed aid-stations at four points along the course, approximately every six miles. All runners will have 32 hours to complete the course. Runners in the 100- and 50-mile races start 6 a.m. Marathoners begin at 7 a.m.
