From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 7, 1988:

• More than 4,000 athletes were beginning to arrive in Lawrence for the 1988 Junior Olympics. Busloads were arriving at Kansas University’s Allen Fieldhouse to register for the games, which were expected to also bring about 10,000 coaches, relatives, and spectators to town. Fourteen different sports were to be played in various venues throughout town, including facilities provided by KU, the city, the Lawrence school district, and Haskell Indian Junior College. Many of the athletes were staying at KU residence halls, but most of the support people and family members had found lodging at hotels and motels around town.
• The annual livestock auction at the Douglas County Fair had brought in more than $73,000 as 129 animals raised by 4-H and FFA members were purchased by local businesses and individuals. Sallie Mae had purchased the grand champion market steer for $2,571.50, with a sale bid of $1.85 per pound. Mike’s Harwood had bought the reserve champion market steer with a sale bid of $1 per pound for a total steer price of $1,340.
