From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 5, 1973:

• The setting of a date to receive bids on the old public library building, Ninth and Vermont, had been delayed this week by a 3-2 vote of the Lawrence City Commission. A local historian urged preservation of the building, saying that its “classical revival style” was rather unusual; however, he made no suggestion for its potential use. City Manager Buford Watson said that renovation of the building for city office space was estimated to cost $500,000, but some at the meeting countered that figure, saying it was too high. In a meeting after the public session, the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Board agreed to pursue renovation and expansion of the health department’s rented offices at Seventh and New Hampshire. Health board chair Dr. Raymond Schwegler said that the department needed four small examining rooms and more than the one single bathroom then available.
• A Lawrence woman had attempted suicide by drowning in the Kansas River on a recent evening. A local resident had pulled her from the river before calling police. The woman, whose name and age were not given, had been treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital before being released to the care of a friend at about 10 p.m.
