Metropolitan Opera tenor Hugo Vera, a Kansas University alumnus, started the company, formerly called Lawrence Opera Works, as a way to give back to Lawrence.

“The city has a special place in my heart, and many who are currently singing in New York and all over the world still talk about how much they would like to return to Lawrence,” Vera said in the season announcement.

The company has drawn performers from colleges across the country to spend a few weeks creating music in Lawrence, Vera said. Performances aren’t limited to opera, but include operetta and musical theater as well.
