From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 4, 1973:

• A front-page photo today was accompanied by this paragraph: “Men working for United Telephone Company of Kansas Inc. lay telephone cable along the Vinland Blacktop, one mile east of Vinland, preparing modern telephone service for the city. The $125,000 telephone system will connect Vinland with Baldwin, and do away with the ‘number please’ operators that have relayed Vinland’s phone calls for years. The underground transmission line are expected to be completed by September, and complete telephone service will begin in May.”
• Fire had caused an estimated $2,000 damage to the not-yet-completed Kansas University Student Health Center at about 7:15 the previous evening. The cause of the blaze at the $3.6 million building, still under construction near Robinson Gymnasium, was listed as undetermined and was under investigation. Lawrence firefighters said that there had been no electrical current on in the area at the time but that the soundproofing materials used in the building were “highly combustible.” The fire department had been recalled at 11:40 p.m. when a fire had rekindled on the second floor of the facility.
