Volunteers are needed in Douglas County to manually count bicycles and pedestrians at specific locations next month.

The data will help city and regional leaders estimate the usage and demand for bicycle and pedestrian facilities, as well as to track the use of non-motorized transportation to use for grant applications, evaluation of existing projects and to help determine where investments for pedestrians and bicyclists need to be made in the future.

The bicycle counts will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 11-12, as well as from noon to 2 p.m. on Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28. Anyone interested in volunteering must attend at least one training session, which will be from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 26 and 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Lawrence City Commission Room at City Hall, 6 E. Sixth St.; 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Eudora Parks and Recreation Community Room; and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Baldwin Public Library.

Volunteers will be taught the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project method created by Alta Planning and Design and the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Previously trained volunteers are not required to attend training.
