Family Promise golf: Former Kansas University basketball player Wayne Simien, KU coach Bill Self and his wife, Cindy, again will co-chair the Family Promise Golf Tournament and auction party. The auction party will be Sept. 15 at Maceli’s. On Sept. 16, four-person teams will compete in two flights of the golf tournament at Alvamar Country Club. Softball school: The Five Tool Softball School will have tryouts for 18-, 16-, 14-, and 12-year-old girls fastpitch teams for this fall/summer of 2014. There are spots available on all five current Five Tool teams. Depending on interest, additional teams will be formed if needed. Tryouts will be held at the Free State softball field beginning at 2 p.m. (registration starting at 1:30 p.m.) on Aug. 3 and 4. Ad Astra excellence: Ad Astra Area Aquatics had 33 athletes qualify for — and placed third in the large-team division, behind the larger Kansas City Blazers and Columbia Tiger Sharks at — the Missouri Valley Long Course Championship meet July 26-28 in Wichita. To qualify, swimmers had to meet Div. I times at prior meets. Nine of Ad Astra’s swimmers qualified for this weekend’s Central Zone 14 and Under Meet in Topeka. The nine are: Peyton Krug, JT Amerein, Ainsely Krug, Josh Florence, Claire Campbell, Emily Venters, Daniel Christie, Stephen Johnson and Marian Frick. Two AAAA swimmers — Sydney Sirimongkhon-Dyck and Canaan Campbell — will compete at the NSCA Junior Nationals, July 30-Aug. 3 in Indianapolis. AAAA will hold tryouts for the fall season from 5:30-7 p.m., Aug. 27-28 at the Indoor Aquatic Center.

Pickleball prowess: Eight Lawrence pickleball players earned medals at Sunflower State Games pickleball tournament in Topeka. They were: 65-plus, mixed doubles, Charles Hart and Ginny Honomichl, silver; 60-plus men’s doubles, Kirk Devine and Larry Cloud, bronze; 70-plus men’s doubles, Charles Hart and Norm Runyon, silver; 60-plus women’s doubles, Ginny Honomichl and Jane Harris, bronze; open women’s doubles, Rebecca Wempe and Ann Broxterman, gold; 40-plus mixed doubles, Rebecca Wempe and Tom Granger, bronze; 60-plus mixed doubles, Kirk Devine and Janet Spiegel, silver.
