From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 1, 1988:

• The state fire marshal’s office had been called in to investigate a recent Sunday morning fire at a rural home. The house, in Johnson County about a mile east of the Douglas County line southeast of Eudora, had been under construction at the time of the blaze and no utilities had been connected. Dale Walker, assistant chief of Johnson County Rural Fire District No. 3, said that a request to investigate had been filed with the fire marshal’s office the night of the fire. “It’s pretty unusual for a house to burn with no electricity or gas,” Walker explained, adding that the structure had been totally destroyed. A caller to the Journal-World claimed that the owners of the property had received threats because of the location they had chosen for their new home. A fire official said that the investigation would attempt to verify those claims.
• Most Kansas voters were predicted to stay away from the polls for the upcoming primary election. Almost three-quarters of the state’s voters were forecast to just stay home, according to Kansas Secretary of State Bill Graves. However, according to county clerk Patty Jaimes, a larger-than normal turnout was expected in Douglas County due to a few interesting local races. “I think there’s a special interest in the sheriff’s race and the two county commission races,” Jaimes said.
