LHS softball sweeps Pioneers

? Sophomore Morgan Byrn nearly hit for the cycle, and Lawrence High softball busted out of a five-game losing streak with a pair of five-inning victories Monday at Leavenworth.

Byrn singled, doubled and homered, with four RBIs in Lawrence’s 13-0 victory to open the doubleheader, then helped the Lions sweep with a double and a triple in an 18-1 win.

“She’s a really good player,” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “All day long she was just making solid contact. Honesty, all year long she’s been hitting the ball really well.”

With just four games left in the regular season, Wood said Lawrence (6-10) needed to build momentum before the postseason arrives.

“It was a really good day,” the coach said of the sweep. “It had been awhile since we had seen the girls out there having fun.”

Pitchers Megan Sumonja (eight strikeouts in Game One) and Amanda Montgomery (two hits allowed in Game Two) each picked up a win.

Byrn, Sami Buffalomeat, Jolana Shield, Marly Carmona, Andrea Mills and Lillie Huckaby all drove in multiple runs.

LHS will play host to Shawnee Mission North on Thursday.
