From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 30, 1973:

• Alison Gold, 11, was the winner of the Kansas spelling bee for 1973. Alison, a sixth grader at Centennial School had won the Douglas County Spelling bee twice before going on to represent the county. She was one of the youngest in the field of 94 spellers in the competition to represent Kansas in the national bee in Washington, D.C., in June, as well as the all-time youngest speller to win the state event in its 20-year history. Having spelled down her opponent with “formaldehyde,” Alison had then clinched the title by correctly spelling “codicil.”
• In a shakeup resulting from the Watergate incident the previous summer, President Nixon today announced the resignations of Atty. Gen. Richard G. Kleindienst and top White House aides H. R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman. Nixon also announced that he had fired White House counsel John Dean III.
