Downtown Lawrence businesses offer a number of options, from monogramming to paint-it-yourself pottery. Here are five personalized gifts you can have finished by May 12 (Pssst! Don’t forget to put it on your calendar!).

Cheryl Roth, who owns Sunfire Ceramics, said it’s the thought that counts when it comes to moms, making DIY pottery or other original gifts a great option.

“It can be personalized to really make it something special for her, and it’s nice because it’s made by the person that’s giving it to her,” Roth said. “Moms really do like that.”

Monogram it

If mom’s a fashionista, try monogramming something colorful from Prairie Patches, 821 Massachusetts St.

A Vera Bradley small color block tote — in the springy “Lilli Bell” pattern — features a green custom embroidered monogram ($50 for the tote, plus $10 for embroidery). The Vera Bradley plastic tumbler features a vinyl overlay monogram ($18 for the tumbler, plus $3.50 for the monogram). Allow at least a week to pick up monogrammed orders.

Prairie Patches sells a number of other bags and clothing items that can be monogrammed, as well as Pandora sterling silver bracelets — including special bracelet designs and charms for Mother’s Day.

Have a great photo of mom with her kids, or maybe just the kids? A work of art they created especially for her? A picture that reminds her she’s appreciated?

Make it display-worthy with a custom frame from Framewoods Gallery, 819 Massachusetts St. Framewoods offers countless choices in wood and metal frames and colored matting. Prices typically range from about $20 (like the small colored frame pictured) to $50, depending on size and frame choices.

Create a unique wearable gift with baubles from the “Bead Bar” at Prairie Pond Studio and Bead Co., 11 W. Ninth St.

The store sells tiny sparkly seed beads, large colorful African wedding beads and everything in between. Most cost between 20 cents and $1.50 per bead, though some statement beads are more. The pre-made agate, citrine and Italian glass necklace pictured is $115.

Prairie Pond offers beading instruction appointments for $25 an hour, or you can buy the beads and string them yourself at home.

Paint it

Blank clay vessels are transformed into functional works of art at Sunfire Ceramics, 1002 New Hampshire St.

Sunfire sells ceramics including vases, teapots, picture frames, plates, mugs, candleholders and trinket boxes, and provides paint and brushes for customers to decorate the item of their choosing — Roth said people have even used infants’ hand- or footprints. Once they’re painted, the business kiln-fires items so the colorful glaze becomes dishwasher and microwave safe. Many pieces — such as plates and cups — cost $12 or less, though some larger items cost as much as $60.

Sunfire is open Wednesdays through Sundays, and completed items can be picked up in three to five business days.

Frost it

For a mom with a sweet tooth, Mrs. Fields, 845 Massachusetts St., will personalize cookie cakes, which come in all shapes and sizes.

Choose your message for mom and have Mrs. Fields employees frost it onto a mini cookie cake ($6.99), a boxed “Cookie Card” ($10.99, pictured) or a big cookie cake ($24.25).

Mrs. Fields suggests allowing at least an hour to have your creation completed. You can call ahead or walk in, then pick up the cookie later.
