From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 29, 1988:

Former Lawrence resident Jesse Milan returned to Lawrence this week to speak at a seminar held by the city’s Human Relations Department. Milan had lived in Lawrence from 1948 to 1971, serving as a well-known physical education teacher (the first black teacher hired by the school district, according to a staff member in Human Relations) and active civic leader. He spoke to a reporter today about the battle to build the municipal swimming pool in the late 1960s, during which he had been the target of hatred. Crosses had been burned on his lawn, and he and his family had received death threats, forcing a move to Kansas City. Today, returning to Lawrence was “no big deal,” Milan said. “I don’t have any regrets. I didn’t mistreat anyone. It’s those who mistreated me that have a problem.”
