KU tennis wins Big 12 tournament opener

? Kansas University won the doubles point, then claimed three straight-set singles victories to open the Big 12 Tennis Championships with a 4-1 victory over Iowa State on Thursday at Headington Family Tennis Center.

Dylan Windom and Maria Jose Cardona won at No. 2 doubles, and Victoria Khanevskaya and Anastasija Trubica won at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Cardona (at No. 2), Trubica (at No. 5) and Khanevskaya (at No. 6) earned straight-set singles victories.

“I’m pleased with how the girls came out and their enthusiasm and the drive that they had today,” Kansas coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “It’s hard playing Iowa State back-to-back. The girls prevailed, and I’m really happy for them.”

Kansas defeated Iowa State, 4-3, on Sunday to finish its regular season.

The Jayhawks will face top-seeded Baylor in the tournament quarterfinals at 9 a.m. today.

“It’s definitely going to be tough playing No. 1 Baylor,” Hall-Holt said. “We have to come out with a fighting attitude and the mentality that it’s anybody’s ballgame right now.”
