25 years ago: Volunteers clean up Clinton Lake

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 24, 1988:

  • Recent unseasonably cold weather didn’t keep several hardy volunteers from turning out for the annual cleanup project at Clinton Lake. Although the number of people showing up for the fifth annual event was significantly less than in previous years, the approximately 100 people did not seem deterred by the 40-degree temperatures and a brisk northwesterly wind coming off the lake. Members of scout troops, 4-H groups, and camping clubs made up the majority of the helpers, who collected cans, bottles, and other garbage from the lake area.
  • Predictors of local employment trends were forecasting a very good year for young people looking for summer jobs. “We’re getting quite a few requests right now, mostly in the service and retail kind of things,” said Ed Mills, director of the Lawrence Job Service Center. The local unemployment rate was 4.2 in February and was expected to have dropped to 3.5 percent by mid-April. Salaries for summer jobs ranged from $4 to $5.50 per hour, according to a representative from Manpower.
