Hugo’s homers lead Kansas softball past OSU

? Kansas University freshman Alex Hugo hit her second home run of the game in the fifth inning to give Kansas the lead, 5-4, on the way to a 9-7 softball victory on Saturday at Oklahoma State.

Hugo tied the Kansas freshman home run record.

KU and OSU split the first two games going into today’s series finale at noon.

Kansas (27-12, 4-4) fell behind, 4-1, to Oklahoma State (25-21, 3-8) but had 13 hits during the comeback.

“It was a great effort,” coach Megan Smith said. “Our defense was great, (Alicia) Pille battled the entire game and the offense came through today, which is something we lacked yesterday. We’re very proud of them bouncing back today and proud of the whole effort.”

After Hugo’s second home run, KU batted around in the sixth inning and took a 9-4 lead, but the Cowgirls cut KU’s lead to 9-7 in the seventh. Sophomore pitcher Alicia Pille (11-6) then collected the final out of her 12th complete game of the season.

With her first strikeout of the day in the bottom of the first, Pille became the 10th Jayhawk in program history to record 300 or more career strikeouts. She finished the day with eight, bringing her total to 307.

Hugo went 3-4 and batted in four runs and scored two.

Sophomore catcher Maddie Stein, senior first baseman Mariah Montgomery and junior second baseman Ashley Newman each had two hits.
