LHS tennis sixth at Topeka West

? Lawrence High junior Thomas Irick went 5-1 and placed fifth in singles, and the Lions’ boys tennis team placed sixth Tuesday at the Topeka West Invitational.

The LHS doubles team of Austin Abbott and Christoph Brandt went 4-2 and took seventh place.

Elliott Abromeit went 3-3 and placed 15th in singles. And Kley Bolivar and Adam Eudaly went 2-4 for 17th place in doubles.

The tournament featured 10 teams and included 20 singles players and 20 doubles teams.

“I was pleased with our No. 1 doubles,” LHS coach Chris Marshall said. “We were seeded seventh and finished seventh, so we played to our seed. We could have probably won a couple more games, but I don’t think that would have changed the results.

“I think we’re getting better as a team,” Marshall added. “I think we’re getting better points and using better strategy.”

The tournament was played in temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

“I think we’re starting to get used to it,” Marshall said. “If it’s under 50 degrees, the ball doesn’t bounce like it normally would. The weather is a factor, but it affects everybody.”

Next action for the Lions is Friday in the Lawrence Invitational.
