40 years ago: Trucks haul tons of sand to Clinton Reservoir site

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 15, 1973:

  • Motorists driving on West Sixth Street in the coming days needed to be prepared for the “reactivation of the sand truck armada” hauling thousands of tons of sand to the Clinton Lake dam site, an article warned today. “As before,” the writer cautioned, “most of the drivers ignore speed laws and race along at about 50 miles per hour in 35-mile and 40-mile speed limit zones. Many of the heavily laden trucks have large trailers but they often manage to weave in and out of lanes like a Volkswagen.”
  • Movie fans in Lawrence could visit the Granada this week for a limited-engagement showing of the new movie “Sounder.” Other cinematic possibilities in town this week included “Young Winston,” “Two People,” “The Emigrants,” and “The Valachi Papers.”
