Firebirds baseball wins in extras

? Free State High’s baseball team rallied from two runs down with two outs in the seventh inning Thursday and defeated Shawnee Mission North, 5-4, in eight innings.

Cameron Pope’s two-out double in the seventh scored Jacob Caldwell and Lee McMahon to tie the game, 4-all.

The Firebirds scored the winning run in the eighth when Joe Dineen walked with the bases loaded.

Free State improved to 8-0.

“It’s a funny game,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “There were two occasions when we had the bases loaded and nobody out with the heart of the order up and didn’t score.”

Sam Hearnen, who came on in the fourth inning, picked up the victory to raise his record to 4-0.

“We were more than fortunate to win the game,” Hill said. “I was proud of their grittiness. They didn’t give up.”

Free State will host Leavenworth on Monday.
