40 years ago: Local men charged in Tongie murder

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 11, 1973:

  • Two young men from Tonganoxie were charged this morning in the weekend murder of Mrs. Violet Frank of that town. Richard Lee Roush, 19 and Richard D. Henry, 18, were arraigned in Leavenworth Magistrate Court this morning on charges of first degree murder and burglary, the judge refusing to set bond for the two. The men had been arrested without incident at their homes; Henry had been awaiting sentencing on seven felony charges of theft and burglary to which he had pleaded guilty on March 2.
  • Sparks from an incinerator had blown into a stockroom at Falley’s Discount Foods, 2525 Iowa, causing a fire at 3:25 the previous afternoon. Falley’s and Gibson’s Discount Center had incurred $2,000 damage each to their stock, with the building suffering $750 damage. Managers at each store reported today business as usual, as most of the damage had been confined to the stockrooms.
