From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 7, 1988:

• The national champion Kansas Jayhawks had a busy week ahead. Danny Manning was scheduled to toss out the ball at Sunday’s Kansas City Royals game, after which the entire KU basketball team was to travel to the nation’s capital to visit President Reagan at the White House. Eventually the city of Lawrence would get their chance to honor the Hawks with a mammoth parade on Massachusetts Street. “Anyone who wants to show Jayhawk spirit may march in the parade at no cost,” an article read today. “No limits have been placed on the number of entries. If it rains, the parade will take place anyway.” Disneyland’s Cinderella character was reportedly coming to Lawrence to lead the parade, reflecting the “Cinderella” season experienced by the Jayhawks and their fans.
• U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery, D-Kan., was planning several meetings during today’s afternoon visit to Lawrence. He was scheduled to have a lunch meeting today with Robert Zerwehk, KU associate vice chancellor for research, graduate studies and public service, to discuss federal funding for KU research. Slattery was also scheduled to tour Lawrence Memorial Hospital and hold informal discussions with LMH staff about Medicare and other topics. A tour of the facilities of the Audio Reader Network and meetings with a world hunger group and the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice was to round out the evening.
