25 years ago: Local drug bust yields several arrests

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 6, 1988:

  • Douglas County District Attorney Jim Flory said today that warrants had been issued to a total of 14 people in a large local drug bust. The warrants had resulted from a multi-agency undercover drug investigation in 1986 and 1987. Seven of the 14 had already been arrested, while the remainder were still being sought.
  • City Commissioner Bob Schumm switched seats today with Mike Amyx to become the new mayor of Lawrence. “I feel it’s an honor and I intend to work very hard to represent the commission and be a spokesman for the commission,” Schumm said today.
  • Monday night had been a very busy night for the Southwestern Bell phone lines in the area. Dave Nichols, the company’s community relations manager for Lawrence, said that there had been a huge rush of phone calls just after the Kansas Jayhawks’ victory in the NCAA championship game. Nichols didn’t have specific figure on how many calls had been made, but the company had reported “scattered instances of slow dial tone” during the rush.
